Subaru of New Zealand has a long history in the local market, becoming the exclusive importer and distributor of the Japanese brand in 1992. The brand is defined by its commitment to Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, which has been standard across its entire local range since 1997, and the use of horizontally opposed Boxer engines. Subaru has established a reputation among Kiwi drivers for safety and reliability, being the first automotive company in New Zealand to achieve a maximum five-star ANCAP safety rating across its entire lineup.
The current range is led by the popular Outback and Forester SUVs, alongside the Crosstrek compact SUV, the WRX performance range, and the BRZ sports coupe. Recently, the brand has expanded into electrification with the launch of the all-electric Solterra and various hybrid variants.
